What do pub team leaders do?
There’s a certain buzz to a busy pub shift. Orders are coming in, customers are catching up over food and drinks, and the team is working together to keep everything moving. As a Pub Team Leader, you’re right in the middle of it, helping people know what needs doing and stepping in when they need a hand.
If you enjoy hospitality and feel ready for more responsibility, pub Team Leader jobs can be a brilliant next step. You’ll still be part of the action, but you’ll also start developing the leadership skills that can take your career further. So, what does a Pub Team Leader actually do at Greene King? Let’s take a look.
What is a Pub Team Leader?
A Pub Team Leader helps keep a shift running smoothly while supporting the people working around them.
At Greene King, that means leading by example. You could be checking that everyone has what they need before service gets busy, helping a team member through a tricky moment or making sure customers leave wanting to come back.
You’re not watching the shift happen from the sidelines. You’re part of the team, working alongside your colleagues and noticing where you can make a difference.
That combination of hands-on hospitality and responsibility is what can make hospitality Team Leader jobs such a useful step for someone who enjoys pub life but wants to start building their leadership experience.
What does a Pub Team Leader do during a shift?
No two shifts are exactly alike. A quiet weekday lunch has a very different rhythm to a packed Friday night, and part of becoming a good Team Leader is learning how to respond to what’s happening around you.
Your responsibilities can include:
- helping organise the team and keeping the shift on track
- making sure customers receive a warm and memorable experience
- supporting colleagues when things get busy
- stepping up when members of the management team aren’t available
- helping make sure the bar remains safe, legal and clean
- dealing with problems quickly and calmly when they arise
There’s a practical side to the role, but good leadership often comes down to the smaller moments too.
Someone might need a bit of encouragement after a difficult interaction. A customer might have a problem that needs sorting there and then. The team might suddenly get hit by a rush and need someone who can see what needs doing next.
That’s where a strong Team Leader earns their stripes.
Pub Team Leader jobs are all about bringing people together
You’ll work closely with plenty of people during a shift.
Front-of-house colleagues will look to you for direction and support. You’ll work with the kitchen team to help service flow between the kitchen and the pub. You’ll keep in touch with pub management about how the shift is going and anything that needs attention.
And then there are the customers.
Our pubs are places where people come together, whether that’s for a family meal, a catch-up after work or a pint while they watch the match. Helping create those moments is a big part of working at Greene King.
It’s also where our value of Win, Learn, Celebrate Together really comes into its own. Great shifts happen when people pull together, learn from what happens and share the successes. A Team Leader helps create the environment that makes that possible.

What skills do you need for hospitality Team Leader jobs?
You don’t become a great Team Leader simply by knowing how everything in the pub works.
Knowing the job helps, of course. But leadership is also about how you work with people.
You know how to communicate
During a busy service, clear communication makes everyone's job easier. You’ll need to explain what needs doing, listen when colleagues raise an issue and adapt the way you communicate depending on the situation.
You can keep your head when the pub gets busy
There will be shifts where several things need your attention at once. Being organised helps you work out what matters most, keep things moving and avoid passing your own stress on to the team.
You’re comfortable solving problems
Things don’t always go to plan in hospitality. Someone may call in sick, a customer might need help or the team might suddenly find itself much busier than expected.
A Team Leader doesn’t need to magically have every answer. You do need to be willing to take ownership, make sensible decisions and know when to ask for support.
You help other people do their best
Leadership doesn’t have to mean being the loudest person on shift.
Sometimes it means noticing that somebody is struggling and giving them a hand. Sometimes it’s showing a new colleague how something works. And sometimes it’s recognising that the team has absolutely smashed a busy service and making sure they know it.
What is the difference between a Pub Team Leader and a Pub Manager?
The biggest difference is the level and breadth of responsibility.
A Team Leader is focused heavily on the shift in front of them: helping coordinate colleagues, maintaining standards and dealing with issues as they happen.
Our Pub Management roles, including Assistant Manager and General Manager positions, carry wider responsibility for how the pub operates. That can mean managing people, planning ahead and taking greater ownership of the overall performance of the business.
You don’t have to jump straight from being a team member into management, though.
A Team Leader role gives you somewhere to practise leading people and making decisions while continuing to build your understanding of how a pub works day to day.
Can a Pub Team Leader job lead to management?
It certainly gives you the chance to build plenty of the skills you would need if management is where you eventually want to go.
You’ll gain experience of making decisions during a shift, organising other people, handling customer situations and thinking beyond your own individual tasks. Over time, you start seeing a pub differently: not only what needs doing, but why it matters and how the different parts of the operation fit together.
That experience can provide a strong foundation if you decide you’d like to explore Assistant Manager jobs or other management opportunities later in your career.
And leadership skills travel well. The National Careers Service highlights communication, customer service, working well with others and the ability to motivate people among the skills associated with hospitality management.
Is a Pub Team Leader job right for you?
You might already be the person people naturally turn to when a shift gets busy.
Maybe you enjoy helping new colleagues settle in. Perhaps you’re good at spotting what needs doing without waiting to be asked. Or you’ve reached the point where you know you love working in pubs and want to see how far you could take it.
You don’t have to arrive as the finished article. Part of stepping into leadership is learning what kind of leader you want to be.
At Greene King, our purpose is to pour happiness into lives, and Team Leaders have an important part to play in that. When your team feels supported, they’re in a better position to give customers the experience they came for.
