It’s all about creating an environment where your team can thrive, where everyone knows their stuff, and where your customers are wowed with a 5-star experience. We’ve put together 5 key skills that will make you a standout team leader:

1. Motivational leadership skills

From the moment our team leaders step through the door, they lead by example making sure our customers, and teams, have a great time. A great team leader knows how to motivate and inspire their team members.

At Greene King, we embrace individuality and care for each other and are striving to create a culture of Everyday Inclusion. As a team leader, it’ll be your job to make it easy for everyone to bring their whole selves to work.

2. Problem-solving skills

We know that things don’t always go as planned, whether it’s a suddenly busy lunch period or an unexpected hiccup, but that’s exactly why being a problem-solving pro is a must-have skill for our team leaders.

You’ll be working with a whole mix of people and experience new scenarios every day, so you’ll be quick on your feet and have the ability to solve any challenges that come your way.

This might look like making a decision that guides your team to success or satisfying a customer's needs. While our teams are diverse, our behaviours are what we have in common and one of our behaviours is drive. This means thinking of the bigger picture, putting customers first, and always innovating and evolving.

3. Organisational skills

Our team leaders keep things running as smoothly as possible with their amazing organisational skills. In this role, organisational skills look like being proactive, staying on top of moving parts as well as your team, and having systems in place so you are able to deliver exceptional experiences to our customers.

It also means trusting your team and having the ability to delegate. We win, learn, and celebrate together at Greene King so it’s important to remember that whilst you are a team leader, we’re all in it together.

4. Interpersonal skills

Interpersonal skills or people skills, however you like to say it, it’s about how you interact and collaborate with your team members. We want all of our team members to feel valued, motivated and empowered and our team leaders play a key role in creating a place where everyone feels welcome.

So we’re looking for people who lead with empathy, can build strong relationships, and create a sense of belonging for their team.

Interpersonal skills go a step further at Greene King as they go beyond our teams and reach our customers too. Customers visit our pubs, restaurants, and hotels to enjoy memorable and fun experiences and as a team leader, you’ll have a customer-first approach to make sure customers come back time and time again.

5. Communication skills

Clear and open communication is at the heart of any good leader. It is the ability to communicate expectations, provide feedback or share important information so everyone on your team is on the same page.

Another one of our key behaviours is connecting and this means we communicate with respect and impact. Every single person on our teams is a valued member and helps steer us along our journey towards becoming the pride of British hospitality.
